So, I read a lot on the internet, since I can't afford to buy a hundred books a year and my library subscription ran out. Some of what I read is fanfiction, but for the last few years, I've been reading more and more original fiction and web literature. I thought I'd share a recommendations list. Try those stories, and maybe recommend a few of your own?
Beware, most of this is gay.

The Peacock King
By: Irk&Char

It's awesome. Oh wait. *steals official blurb*

''The enigmatic Peacock King, ruler of half of the known world, seeks to possess the land itself by enslaving the spirits
of the wild. Gerald, a newly initiated Poet whose magic is as real as he can write it, is also one of the Armed — enforcers of the Law who wield guns with souls. His mission: infiltrate the Peacock King's Court and gather intelligence. Unfortunately for Gerald, things quickly go awry...

Can he outwit the Peacock King? Will he be able to save his long-lost brother, who is the King's new spirit-tamer?''

In short, it is a story about stupid spies getting caught, magic sword kings, traps, men in makeup, talking guns, brawls where people get bitten, ecological activism, hardcore diary writing, world war, caffeinated politics, chess games over custody, dramatic courtroom fingerpointing, and tea.

Gratification-level: Currently four novel-lenght 'books' are finished, more are planned to be written. There's also a ton of short stories. The artwork is very pretty. The characters are refreshingly non-heteronormative, even though only a few are gay.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: I already kind of did, though the paper copies will come out not very soon.

Shousetsu Bang*Bang
By: Various Authors

More gay short stories than you can shake a stick at, of all genres. All of them are explicit, most of the authors are really f*ing talented. I have written for this 'zine and consider myself to be part of the moderately-talented lower 30% there. (pseud: seiwa kaiyura)

Gratification level: They have everything. EVERYTHING. Each issue has another theme, so unless you hate explicit slash, you will be guaranteed to find a story that floats your boat.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: Sadly is never going to happen, too many different authors.

Captive Prince
By: freece

Fantasy about sharp-tongued pretty princes that make you wince away from the screen with their remarks, uppity manly slaves, lots of intrigue and warfare, a fuckton of unresolved sexual tension and the subversion of some cliches.

Gratification level: If you muddle through the mediocre first few chapters, you will be hooked, addicted and read it through in one session, screaming with frustration when you finish the latest chapter and have to wait two months for the
next. Well, I did.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: Not yet, but there'll be an e-book of book one soon.

In the Company of Shadows
By: Sonny&Ais

Content: Post-WWIII-world spy drama with romance and lots of drama/angst. And UST. Ohh the delicious UST.

Gratification level: It's epically long, the smut and action scenes are really great, but still a work in progress.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: Nope.

A Frequent Traveller's Guide to Jovan
By: Ellipsis

Content: of an Empire racked by intrigue, facing invasion from abroad and treason from within.A young Empress recalls her two uncles to the capital, hoping their presence will help her keep her throne…
Cassius, a seasoned military commander with an impulsive temper and a decided preference for the company of men, and Valentin: politician, diplomat and spy. Seventeen years ago, their brother the Emperor banished them to separate corners of the Empire for a crime few people know the truth of.
But now they’re back.

The adventures of Valentin and Cassius, who face traitors, tyrants, bandits, femmes fatale and manage to prevent roughly as many wars as they start — all in service of the Empire. More or less.
Political intrigue and other court games to the max!

Gratification level: Low gay content, but the characters really grow on you.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: No, but I have the PDF of book one.

Shadow of the Templar
by: M. Chandler

Content: Simon Drake is an up-and-coming young FBI hotshot, an agent with a personal track record so outstanding that it borders on unbelievable. Not yet thirty, he's already the leader of his own special ops team; a ragtag bunch of talented but nigh-uncontrollable lunatics, it's true, but under Simon's inspired leadership they're a force to be reckoned with, a
team with an unparalleled success rate, a team with an almost unblemished record--until now.

Jeremy Archer is the brilliant and unpredictable scion of a long line of international art thieves, simultaneously a phenomenally wealthy English socialite and one of the most infamous criminals in the world. At twenty-seven years old he's already wanted on nearly every continent for thefts totalling more than ninety-one million dollars, and yet no one has ever come close to catching
him--until now.

Now? May the best man win.

Gratification level: First, the UST and the banter and the wacky characters drive you insane. THEN you find the side story section that has all the faded-out sex scenes. Hrrrr. The main four volumes are finished, but there are still side stories being written.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: Yes, I bought all four volumes. Hoping M will do a collection volume for all the short stories, too.

More stories by the same author:

100 candles
by: Sakana Sara

"I deal with a lot of seriously freaky stuff. Like “I see dead people” freaky.
I just want you to know what you’re getting into. The last guy I went out with ran away screaming like a girl the first time he saw a tea kettle with legs walking around some old lady’s house."

Jeff is a perfectly normal young man with a perfectly normal life. Then he finds a cursed fortune-telling doll washed up on the beach, meets author and paranormal investigator Kenny Tachibana in the process of trying to get rid of it, and pretty much kisses that normal life goodbye after that. At least he gets an awesome new boyfriend out of the deal.

This story started out on SSBB, but evolved into a whole series. Ghosts, demons, gay romance. <3

Gratification factor: The series has not been updated in over two years, so the chance it's ever going to be finished is slim, but the existing chapters/stories stand well on their own and are totally worth the read.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: No.

The Administration Series
by: Manna Francis

Content: There are no bad guys. There are no good guys. There are only better guys, and worse guys.
One of the worse guys is Val Toreth. In a world where torture is a legitimate part of the investigative process, he works for the Investigation and Interrogation Division .
One of the better guys is Keir Warrick, a corporate director. His small corporation, SimTech, is developing a 'sim' system which places users in a fully-immersive virtual reality.

Their world is the dark future dystopia of New London, where Europe is controlled by a totalitarian bureaucracy, which shares political power with powerful corporations. The oppressive government uses torture, violence and the various
Divisions of the feared Department of Internal Security to maintain power. The corporations fight amongst themselves, using lethal force under the euphemism of 'corporate sabotage', uniting only to resist attempts by the Administration to extend its control over them.
The series follows Warrick and Toreth, and their families, friends and enemies as they struggle to survive and hope to

Gratification level:
It's long, pretty hard core and the character development is pretty interesting.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: The longer stories in this series are available as paperback.

The God Eaters
by: Jesse Hajicek

Imprisioned for 'inflammatory writings' by the totalitarian Theocracy, shy intellectual Ashleigh Trine figures his story's over. But when he meets Kieran Trevarde, a hard-hearted gunslinger with a dark magic lurking in his blood, Ash finds that necessity makes strange heroes... and love can change the world.

Gratification level: Finished novel, an awesome world setting, sweet romance. <3

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: Yes, you can! <3<3<3

Daron's Guitar Chronicles Sex•drugs•rocknroll•the closet•the stage•the 80s
by: Cecilia Tan

Daron’s Guitar Chronicles tells the story of Daron Moondog (real name withheld by request) from about the time he was eighteen onward. He arrives at RIMCon (Rhode Island Musical Conservatory) in the mid-1980s, desperate to leave behind a
dysfunctional family in New Jersey’s suburbs and discover himself. It’s the advent of MTV, AIDS, and punk versus metal, all of which would affect his journey searching for fame, artistic expression, and the courage to seek out the sex and love he needs.

Daron’s Guitar Chronicles is a bildungsroman, which is a fancy word for a novel where the coming of age process is long and gradual.

Gratification level: It's long, but still a work in progress. Sometimes you want to shake the main character a little. The sex scenes are available for a small donation.

Can you buy this as a paper copy?: Nope, but there's e-books of vol. 1-3
